There are broadly two types of renters in Ireland: tenants and licensees. Tenants are defined by legislation, but licensees are largely not. Licensees are generally renters who are not covered by the Residential Tenancies Act, or the main legislation protecting renters.
A security deposit is normally paid by a tenant to a landlord or agent at the beginning of a tenancy and should be returned “promptly” once the tenancy ends.
