Niamh & Aoife’s Story

Home is everything at Christmas. Please support our front-line services and protect children, like Aoife from the trauma of homelessness.

When Niamh got the devastating news from her landlord that she would have to move out, the first thing she did was take her eight-year-old daughter Aoife in her arms and give her a big hug, she didn’t know it, but her Mam was terrified.

Threshold deal with housing discrimination daily. When a landlord looks at Niamh, all they see is a single Mam, and reasons not to rent to her. She’s too much of a gamble. Not worth the risk. There’s always someone ‘more suitable’ standing there – a safer bet.

Niamh & Aoife

“I know I’m much more than that. I know all about the years I’ve worked as a nurse – a job I love dearly. I know about the rare medical condition that forced me to stop work. I know how dedicated I am to raising my Aoife, how much she means to me.”

Threshold helped Niamh secure the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) which mean she was able to find a small and affordable flat for herself and Aoife.

Thanks to Threshold, who fought hard for a temporary ban on evictions, hundreds of people will be spared from the horrors of homelessness over the winter months. However, the threat will still hang over people’s heads.

This Christmas you can ensure Threshold’s caring expert team is there, to listen to each person’s situation and give them the support they need.

“I’m one of the lucky ones. I had a scary time where it seemed I would end up homeless, but I’ve finally managed to secure a place to live. We even got a lovely dog called Rex who Aoife just adores! At long last, I know I’ll be secure this Christmas.”
