Why a Deposit Protection Scheme?
When you give your landlord a deposit, there’s no guarantee when, or even if, you’ll get it back. Will it be returned in a week, six weeks, or never?
A Deposit Protection Scheme would mean deposits are lodged with an independent third party ensuring their prompt return to you, the tenant, at the end of a tenancy unless a bona fide issue arises.
Issues with the current system:
Only 7%
of RTB cases see the landlord keeping the deposit.
Q1 – Q3 2024
saw more dispute resolution applications from renters challenging deposit retention than
renters challenging notices of termination.
Since 2021
there has been an upward trend of the number of applications from renters challenging
deposit retention by landlords.
